The SX Suburban Stainless Steel Coach was built by Commonwealth Engineering at Rocklea, Queensland. The coaches were released into service in 1961/62 and were designed as locomotive-hauled car sets consisting of 1 SXV coach at each end of the set and 5 SX coaches in between. The SX/SXV car sets only ever ran in 7 car sets in Queensland, however they did run as 4 car sets in Western Australia in the mid 1990's when QR leased them to Westrail. During the Bjelke Peterson years, the idea was to transform these cars into Brisbane's first Electric Multiple Units. The conversions were started, but never completed. All SXV guard's vans were modified with the addition of a headlight, destination board and a small drivers console desk which strangely enough was fitted to the left side of the guard's compartment and no electrical controls or running gear were ever added. The SX/SXV cars were not a common sight on Brisbane's South side prior to Electrification (1979) due to the fact that the majority of these stations only had low platforms and these cars had no side steps. In the late 1980's the SXVs had steel plates riveted over the headlight and destination boards.
