B13½ CLASS 0-6-0 LOCOMOTIVE

The best known of four 13½ class locomotives is affectionately known as "Pompey" (398), built at the Ipswich Railway Workshops in 1904. These locomotives were built for shunting duties. Pompey measures 13 000mm in length and has a gross weight of 50.2 tonnes.
In 1937, Pompey was converted from a 6D 13½ tank locomotive to a tender locomotive, using the tender from B13 No. 223.
Her sister engines 396, 397, 399, 400 and 401 were also modified in a similar way, although the tenders fitted were as follows:
Number 396, modified in October 1938 was fitted with tender from B13 number 102.
Number 397, modified in early 1932 was fitted with tender from B13 number 91.
Number 399, modified in November 1938 was fitted with tender from B13 number 61.
Number 400, modified in October 1937 was fitted with tender from B13 number 150.
Number 401, modified in October 1937 wasfitted with tender from C15 number 134.
All B13½ locomotives barring 398 and 400 were withdrawn from service by December 1951.
Number 400 was used as the "ash" loco at Mayne and was retired in 1961.
Number 398 was used as a shunting locomotive in the Ipswich Worshops yard until retired in December 1953.
In the early 1970s, Pompey was put on display at the front entrance to the Ipswich Workshops and became a mascot for the employees. It is currently restored as a static exhibit, and still resides at the entrance to the Ipswich Workshops which is now part of the Ipswich Railway Workshops Museum.
