The VAK Class coal hoppers were built in five groups from 1979-1981. The VAKs were designed to replace the remaining VO class hoppers used throughout the state. The VAKs were built as follows, Numbers 40621-40730 entered service from 1979-1980, Numbers 41136-41190 entered service in 1980, Numbers 41567-41626 entered service from 1980-1981, Numbers 41677-41701 entered service in 1981 And Numbers 41953-41977 also entered service in 1981.
