The OLO wagons came up from NSW in early 1992 whilst still owned by Ampol. Due to Ampol being bought by Caltex a couple of years later, the 18 OLO wagons were stored on the old grain sidings at Pinkenba from around 1994 until 1996 when QR bought them from Caltex. The initial plan from QR was to make use of the bogies and brake equipment. Unlike most QR wagons, the OLOs are a bit of a mixed bag. These wagons were fitted with several different types of bogies. Those being type 23, type 29 and type 30 bogies. The wagons fitted with type 29 and type 30 bogies were fitted with Oscar type bogies, these were fitted with a brake cylinder on the bogie itself and had no actual brake cylinder fitted to the wagon underframes. The wagons also had two variations of underframe, the 9 inch and the 6 inch underframe. As well as this, the OLO wagons were built by several suppliers, those being Tulloch, Commonwealth Engineering and another company in Wacol, Brisbane.

Once bought by QR (for less than he scrap value or so the rumor goes) the wagons were then leased to Shell to run on to their Western Ddepots. At around this time, Shell built a new major depot at miles and these wagons as well as any other 63 tonne tank wagons that could be sourced were utilized on this service.

From arrival in Queensland in 1992, the OLO wagons would have worn a silver livery with a small Ampol logo on them for a period of 4 years, with two of those years being spent stored as Caltex had their own wagons prior to purchasing Ampol. After being sold to QR in 1996, the majority of the OLO wagons were repainted in the usual wagon grey. This most likely would have been done in Toowoomba as it was one of only two wagon maintanence facilities remaining (the other being Townsville).

Of the 18 units purchased and leased by Shell, only 9 were to the design we have produced. The other 9 units were a combination of two and three dome vehicles with various types of bogies, brakes, inspection hatches and underframes.

To round out the OLO class, a further 7 units were constructed, 5 of which were a of an almost identical design as the ORO wagons that QR already had and the remaining two were similar to the OTY wagons.
