The BCZY class container wagons entered service throughout 1994. These types of wagons are the longest freight wagons in service on the QR system. The BCZY class comprises of 170 wagons, numbered 46414-46513 & 46714-46783. These wagons are designed to carry three 20' ISO containers or one 40' and one 20' container. Wagons of this type have been fitted with special bogies known as type QR54A. These wagons are not fitted with a brake cylinder attached to the underframe as the QR54A bogies have them fitted between the frames, these are called a "Brake Box". These modern wagons are fitted with a twin hose brake system, meaning that instead of the single brake line extending from the left hand side of the coupling they are fitted with one on each side.
The BCZY container wagons measure 18.3 metres over headstocks and have a tare weight of only 17.2t which gives them a carrying capacity of between 45.8t and 62.8t depending on the classification of the line. |
